About the Department

Established in 1990 under the auspices of Bhiwapur Mahavidyalaya, the Department of English functions under the visionary leadership of Dr. Jobi George, Principal of the College, and Associate Professor Dr. Raheel K. Quraishi, Head of the Department. The Department is further strengthened by two dedicated faculty members, namely Assistant Professor Dr. Someshwar V. Wasekar and Assistant Professor Dr. Vinita S. Virgandham.

The Department caters to a diverse group of students by offering Compulsory English courses in the B.A., B.Com., and B.Sc. Degree Programmes, along with English Literature in the B.A. Programme. The aim is to develop students’ communicative competence, literary appreciation, and critical thinking skills.

Subject Literary Association

Every academic session, the ‘Subject Literary Association’ a student body comprising representatives from the First, Second, and Final Year programmes is constituted. All departmental academic and co-curricular activities are planned and conducted under the ambit of this Association, fostering leadership, teamwork, creativity, and literary engagement among students.

Departmental Library

The department has its own well-maintained Departmental Library for students. It contains a sufficient number of textbooks, reference books, and other study materials related to the curriculum. New books are regularly added as per the academic requirements of students and faculty. Furthermore, the department also provides access to a digital library, enabling students to explore e-books, research articles, and online resources to enhance their knowledge and support their academic growth.

Infrastructure and Teaching Aids

The Department is equipped with a well-established Language Laboratory featuring ETNL software. This facility enables learners to gain hands-on practice in all aspects of language learning—Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing (LSRW)—thereby enhancing their proficiency, confidence, and overall communication skills.
